DESIGN-BUILD REMODELS FOR WHEELING'S MID-CENTURY HOUSING STOCK
Wheeling has a lot in common with Mount Prospect, which is why we work here often
Wheeling's housing stock is heavy on 1960s and 1970s ranches and splits, similar to Mount Prospect just to the south. The Dunhurst neighborhood, Strathmore on the Green, and the areas near Wheeling High School have block after block of homes built in the same era with similar floor plans, similar bones, and similar layout problems. Closed-off galley kitchens. Undersized primary baths. Unfinished basements.
Skor Construction does Wheeling kitchen and main-level reworks that follow the same playbook we use in Mount Prospect (where we have extensive portfolio work). Wall comes down between the kitchen and the family room. Cabinetry and counters get replaced. Appliances get integrated. The 1960s footprint becomes a 2026 layout. Most projects here run $150,000 to $350,000.
We're a design-build firm, 15 years in business, based in Palatine and working throughout the NW suburbs.
The Village of Wheeling permit process
Wheeling has a standard residential permit process with experienced inspectors who know the older housing stock. Building permits run 3 to 5 weeks for standard remodels. Plumbing and electrical sub-permits are filed alongside the building permit. Structural changes require architect-stamped drawings.
We handle the submittals, inspections, and Village coordination through final walkthrough. For homes with original 1960s electrical service (often undersized 60 or 100 amp panels) and original galvanized water supply, we budget contingency in the proposal because those discoveries are common during demolition. Total pre-construction timeline: 8 to 10 weeks for a typical kitchen.
Wheeling remodeling FAQs
The questions we hear most often from homeowners in Wheeling and the surrounding Northwest suburbs and North Shore.
- How long does a Wheeling remodel take?expand_more
-
Kitchen remodels run 10 to 14 weeks of construction. Primary bath remodels 6 to 10 weeks. Whole-home projects 5 to 9 months. Village permits typically take 3 to 5 weeks. Total timeline from contract to walkthrough: 16 to 22 weeks for a kitchen, longer for whole-home work.
- What does a Wheeling remodel cost?expand_more
-
Kitchen remodels $75,000 to $175,000. Bathroom remodels $50,000 to $125,000. Basement finishes $75,000 to $200,000. Whole-home remodels $200,000 to $400,000. Additions $150,000 to $500,000 depending on size and structural complexity.
- What surprises come up with 1960s Wheeling homes?expand_more
-
Common discoveries during demolition: knob-and-tube electrical that needs replacement, undersized service panels (60 or 100 amp) that need upgrading to 200 amp, original galvanized water supply lines, asbestos floor tile under newer flooring, and undersized HVAC sized for the original closed-off floor plan. We budget contingency for these in every Wheeling proposal.
- Do you work in Dunhurst and Strathmore on the Green?expand_more
-
Yes. Both neighborhoods are frequent project areas with similar 1960s and 1970s housing stock. The work tends to be kitchen and main-level reworks, primary bath updates, and basement finishes. The bones in these homes are usually solid even when the layouts and finishes feel dated.
- Can you handle the wall removal between my kitchen and family room?expand_more
-
Yes, that's the single most common request on Wheeling kitchens. We coordinate structural engineering, the Village permit process, beam installation, and the rework of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing that lives in that wall. The beam is sized for actual load conditions and the engineered drawings are submitted with the permit.
- What warranty do you offer on remodeling work?expand_more

Our Design-Build Process
It starts with a quick discovery call and an in-person visit, where we walk the space, talk through what you want, and pressure-test ideas against your budget. Within about a week, we send a written investment range so you can decide whether to move forward before anyone designs in a vacuum.
We move into paid design with our architect and interior design partners, producing real floor plans, 3D renderings, and guided selections for finishes and materials. We coordinate the trades and handle permitting, then close with a detailed, fixed-price construction proposal covering scope, allowances, and schedule.
With your approval, we start construction, led by a dedicated project manager with weekly check-ins, so you always know what's happening and what's next. You leave with a finished space, a written workmanship warranty, and a real human to call if anything needs attention down the road.

Skor Construction is fabulous. I was looking for a general contractor for a home addition and renovations. Anton took the time to keep me posted and respected my time and budget. He conducted a home visit, spending hours talking about options, processes, and what to expect. His knowledge and understanding greatly impressed me. I would recommend Anton and his team 10 out of 10 times.
